Unit 2 is typically a four-week unit taught in November.

Unit Overview

Mathematics is a tool to solve problems in everyday life. In this unit, students apply knowledge of measurement concepts to solve problems involving linear measures and area.
Students begin the unit by investigating linear measures. In Grade 2, students measured in centimeters, feet, and to the nearest 1/2 inch. In Grade 3, students use knowledge of standard measures as they convert between inches, feet, and yards and explore a variety of measurement problems. By establishing referent measures for standard units, students in Grade 3 are able to use these benchmarks for more accurate estimation. Knowledge of linear measurement is applied in Grade 3 as students investigate the concept of perimeter. In Grade 4, students will measure in millimeters and to the nearest 1/4 and 1/8 inch.
In the second part of the unit, students explore relationships between perimeter and area. The distinction is made between units used to measure perimeter (a one –dimensional measure) and area (a two-dimensional measure). Key concepts emphasized are:

• Area is a measurement of how much surface is covered (not a length measurement like perimeter).
• Areas of figures can be determined by counting squares or partial squares.
• Rearranging the parts of a region will not change the area.
• Figures with the same area will not necessarily have the same perimeter.
