Goal
In the 21st century, a deep understanding of mathematics, and the ability to apply that understanding, is more important than it has ever been. In Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS), and across the country, mathematics instruction is changing to make sure we provide our students with the skills and knowledge they need for success in college and the workplace.
Courses That Lead to College and Career Readiness
Student success in Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) is represented by their journey on the Pathways to College, Career and Community Readiness. A combination of achievements with academic milestones and competencies, and engagement in experiences will ensure success on their journey. Students are expected to achieve success in Algebra II no later than the end of grade 11, with ongoing success on the Math MCAP, from grade 4 through Algebra 1. Proficiency with all grade level math standards from Kindergarten through grade 8 ensures success in Algebra I.
Algebra readiness can occur at different points in a student’s maturation. Students are best served by Algebra 1 when they demonstrate prerequisite mathematical understandings, skills, and readiness.

High School Graduation Requirements
Four credits in mathematics, including 1 credit in algebra and 1 credit in geometry are required for graduation.
