Philosophy

The goal of the English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) program is to help ESOL students develop proficiency in the academic English needed to be successful in school, college, the work place, and as citizens. The education of students learning English as a new language is a collaborative responsibility shared by the ESOL teacher, the classroom teacher, all other appropriate MCPS staff, as well as the ESOL student.

Structured, systematic English language development instruction supports the annual measurable achievement objective (AMAO) in progress in and attainment of English language proficiency, as well as adequate yearly progress (AYP) in reading, math, and science.
