    Welcome to 3rd Grade!

    Our team is very excited about the upcoming year and having the opportunity to work with your children.  Our goal is to instill in each child a love of learning, a willingness to take risks, an increased ability to think critically, and greater confidence in themselves as writers, readers, and problem-solvers.  

     
    Dr. Seuss shared the following quote,  

     “You have brains in your head.  You have feet in your shoes.  You can steer yourself in any direction you choose.” 

    Once again, welcome to third grade.

    Third Grade School Supply List

    Meet the 3rd Grade Teachers:

     Mrs. Myers - I grew up in Montgomery County and graduated from Good Counsel High School in 2001. I attended The Catholic University of America and graduated in 2005 with a Bachelor's degree in Early Childhood Education. I then decided to pursue my education further and stayed an extra year at Catholic, earning my Master's degree in Special Education in 2006. While taking graduate classes, I became an intern here at Sequoyah Elementary in a 4th grade class, and was hired to teach 3rd grade the next fall. I have been teaching 3rd grade at Sequoyah since 2006. My husband, Jesse, and I have two children, Lucy and Henry. When I'm not teaching I enjoy hanging out with my family, reading, cooking, being crafty, going out to eat, and camping. 

     

     Mr. Skinker - I grew up in Montgomery County and graduated from Gaithersburg High School.  I received my Bachelor’s degree in Communications from Elon College in 1996.  I began working as an Instructional Assistant while I earned my Masters Degree in Special Education.  I graduated from Trinity University in 1999.  In addition to Sequoyah ES, I have worked at Cedar Grove ES and Georgian Forest ES.  My wife, Annamarie, is a Speech Language Pathologist.  We are blessed to have three wonderful children, two boys and a girl.  In my spare time I love relaxing with my family, spending time at the pool, watching and attending sporting events (Go Redskins!), playing golf, coaching my children and I collect Pez.  

     

    Ms. Buras-

    I grew up in Montgomery County and graduated from Damascus High School in 2010. Afterwards, I attended the Honors College at West Virginia University and graduated in 2015 with a Master's degree in Elementary Education. I came back to Montgomery County and taught 5th grade at Laytonsville Elementary School during the 2015-2016 school year. The 2016-2017 school year was my first year at Sequoyah Elementary School! I live in Damascus, Maryland with my two spoiled cats (Prince Caspian and Xena, Warrior Princess). When I'm not teaching, I spend most of my time hiking and camping, reading, hanging out with my family and friends, and gardening. 

    Ms. Yang-

    I grew up in Montgomery County and graduated from Wootton High School in 2009. At Wootton, I had the opportunity to intern at Fallsmead Elementary School, and fell in love with teaching. Instead of staying on the pre-med track, I attended the University of Maryland, College Park and graduated in 2013 with a Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education with a focus on Science and a second degree in History (because history is fun!) During my Senior year at College Park, I interned at Meadow Hall Elementary School in Montgomery County. Shortly after graduation, I subbed for Montgomery County and began teaching at Georgian Forest Elementary School in the Fall of 2013. I taught 2nd grade for 4 years at Georgian Forest. In 2017, I began to teach in Sequoyah Elementary School. I currently live in the Silver Spring area, near College Park. I am working on my Masters in STEM education, and plan to graduate this spring. When I am not at school, I enjoy climbing at Earth Treks, playing volleyball, trying new food, reading and being involved with my church.
