Environmental Sustainability Updates
Help MCPS become a 100% Certified Green School District!
Do you know if your school is a certified Green School?
The aim of U.S. Department of Education Green Ribbon Schools (ED-GRS) is to inspire schools, districts, and institutions of higher education (IHEs) to strive for 21st-century excellence by highlighting promising school sustainability practices and resources that all can employ. To that end, the award recognizes schools, districts, and IHEs that:
- reduce environmental impact and costs;
- improve the health and wellness of schools, students, and staff; and
- provide effective environmental and sustainability education
In 2020, Oakland Terrace Elementary School received this prestigious award bringing to a total of eleven MCPS schools receiving the award since the inception of the program in 2012. For complete list of MCPS awardees, please click here.
Drive for Supplies Success
For the first time since the pandemic, MCPS hosted the annual Drive for Supplies program at Clarksburg High School. At the close of each school year, students clear out their desks and lockers and donate any unused or gently used school supplies to students who may need them in the coming year. On July 14, 2023, 1005 students and families and 17 area non-profit agencies shopped through 5,234.6 pounds of supplies that were donated.
A project of this nature repurposes needed supplies to our students in need as well as save items from being wasted and placed in our landfills. Additionally, this project saves the district money by not paying to haul away 5,000+ pounds of waste.
The success of this project can be attributed to the 36 schools who donated, the 30 students from across MCPS volunteered to sort the supplies to prepare them for distribution, staff from Clarksburg High School, and the collaboration between the Division of Student Leadership & Extracurricular Activities, the Division of Environmental Sustainability, and the Division of Materials Management. We look forward to continuing to rebuild the program after the pandemic.
