Speech and Language Services

Speech and Language Services is staffed and supported through the Division of PreKindergarten Special Programs and Related Services. Our speech-language pathologists provide service to students with communication disorders involving articulation, fluency, oral language, or voice. Services range from consultation to direct intervention and are provided for children from birth to age 21.

The mission of MCPS Speech and Language Services is to provide comprehensive services for the prevention, assessment, diagnosis, and intervention of communication disabilities related to educational success, in accordance with federal and state regulations. Services focus on oral, gestural, and/or augmentative communication skills, reflecting consideration of best practices in the field of speech-language pathology.

Services are individualized for each student, are based on the student's total educational program, and take into account the range of ability and performance of students within the school setting.

The goal of MCPS Speech and Language Services is to develop oral communication skills that are the underpinnings of the curriculum in order to promote student success.

What we do

  • Remediate communication disorders and facilitate the development of compensatory skills to allow students to reach their potential to understand and use speech and language in an educational setting.
