All Maryland public schools are members of the Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletics Association (MPSSAA).
The MPSSAA website provides post season tournament information, including fan information, tournament playing rules, tournament results, and emergency scheduling messages if applicable.
MPSSAA region and state competition in most sports is divided into four classifications, determined by school size. Many sports conduct regional and state tournaments in the four classifications, but not all sport tournaments are determined by school enrollment. Schools are reclassified every two years.
In the majority of sports, each classification is divided into four regions. Sports such as wrestling, indoor track, swimming and diving, tennis, field hockey and lacrosse have special region alignments.
For the purpose of parity in competition, every two years the MPSSAA will divide all Maryland public high schools into four classifications based upon enrollment in grades 9-11. The twenty-five MCPS high schools are currently classified in 4A, 3A, and 2A.
MCPS schools are aligned into regions according to their state classifications. The regional alignments are described below by sport.
