Mathematics

Elementary School

Goal

Elementary mathematics in Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) is designed to create mathematical thinkers. Learning progresses from the concrete to the abstract, building essential conceptual understanding and mathematical fluency, simultaneously developing both mathematical content and language.

Each elementary student, from PreK through grade 5, is expected to achieve mathematical proficiency as outlined in the Maryland College and Career Ready standards.

Elementary domains of mathematics learning include:

  • Counting and Cardinality (PreKindergarten and Kindergarten only)
  • Operations and Algebraic Thinking (PreK-5)
  • Number and Operations in Base Ten (K-5)
  • Number and Operations: Fractions (3-5)
  • Geometry (PreK-5)
  • Measurement and Data (PreK-5)

Instruction in the elementary classroom utilizes Eureka Math:  a coherent, aligned, focused curriculum.  By using common models and problem solving methods, and an established math block, the student experience progresses smoothly from one grade to the next, and ensures consistency across schools. More information can be found on the Eureka Math Great Minds website.

Teachers then make daily instructional decisions based on the needs of their students in light of the day’s upcoming learning. Needs may include:

  • Social-emotional learning
  • Language development
  • Enrichment
  • Foundational gaps
