NEWS & ANNOUNCEMENTS

Forty-Eighth Student Member of the Board to be Installed July 1

Anuva Maloo, Montgomery Blair High School Junior, will be installed as the 48th Student Member of the Board of Education (SMOB) July 1.

During her term, Ms. Maloo plans to focus on five key areas: educational opportunities, school safety, mental health resources, representation, and infrastructure. She is dedicated to ensuring all student voices are heard through her SMOB Advisory Council, social media, email, and an anonymous feedback form.

Ms. Maloo succeeds Praneel Suvarna, a 2025 graduate of Clarksburg High School. The Board will recognize Suvarna’s service at the July 1 ceremony.

The SMOB installation ceremony will take place July 1, 4:00 p.m. at 15 W. Gude Drive. The ceremony is open to the public, with limited seating. It will also be livestreamed on the MCPS website and broadcast live on Comcast Channel 34, Verizon FIOS Channel 36, and RCN Channel 89.

A Bold Vision for the Future of Our Students

The Board of Education is proud to approve our new Strategic Plan, built around one clear vision: All students graduate Future Ready—with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to thrive and lead.

This plan is bold, student-centered, and built for the future.

Why now?
The world is changing—fast.

Traditional success markers no longer meet today’s needs. Students and families are asking for more. So are employers and colleges. It's time for us to lead, not follow.

The Mission
We are focused on unleashing each student’s full potential through:

  • Rigorous academics
  • Adaptability
  • Critical Thinking
  • Meaningful Relationships

What’s new?
We’re launching the Future Ready Framework, which defines what success looks like today and tomorrow. Our students will be empowered to grow in:

  • Critical Thinking
  • Communication
  • Collaboration
  • Creativity
  • Community Impact
  • Wellbeing

Our four clear goals:

  1. Student Achievement
  2. Post-Secondary Readiness
  3. Climate and Operations
  4. Staff Support

Together, we’re building a future where every student is Future Ready. MCPS will launch the new Strategic Plan webpage later this summer.

Student Leaders Spotlight: MCR Makes Big Impact in 2024–2025

The Montgomery County Regional (MCR) Student Government Association shared highlights from a successful year of student advocacy and leadership.

Why it matters:

MCR represents all 26 MCPS high schools, connecting hundreds of student leaders through events, advocacy, and civic engagement. Their middle school counterpart, MCJC, supports students in grades 6–8.

Big wins this year:

  • Hosted statewide leadership events and trained nearly 500 students at Next Generation Leadership Day
  • Met with state and national lawmakers to advocate for youth-focused legislation
  • Held general assemblies at five high schools, attended by 300–400 students each
  • Trained students in public speaking, testimony writing, and policy engagement
  • Raised over $1,600 to support student-led projects

What’s next:

MCR plans to grow its reach, elevate student voices, and develop a policy platform that reflects the needs of all MCPS students.

Discover all the great things MCR did this year by watching their presentation to the Board of Education.
