MVMS Book Fair

The Scholastic Book Fair is still running through Tuesday morning at 11 AM. Choosing their own books empowers kids and inspires them to become Bolder, Prouder, and Stronger Readers. AND—as always—every book they buy earns rewards for our school.

Here’s what you need to know about the Fair, which will take place from May 30th to June 6th,  in the media center.

This year, say goodbye to cash and hello to eWallet—your child’s digital payment account. Before the Fair, set up eWallet for worry-free, cash-free purchases. Anyone can contribute! Share each child’s eWallet so friends and family can add funds and give your kids more books to enjoy. More information about eWallet can be found on the book fair website (see below).

The fair also accepts cash, cards and most payment apps.

If you can’t make it to the Fair, then shop at our school’s Online Book Fair. All orders ship directly to your home, and shipping is free for book orders over $25. Your online orders will also benefit our school.

Vision and Hearing Screenings

Vision and Hearing screenings were held at your child’s school on September 15, 16, and 19.

All children enrolled in Grade 8 were screened for hearing and vision problems if they were in school on the screening day(s).

If your child did not pass the screening, you will have already received a referral letter, via US mail, with the notice of your child’s not passing and specific results of your child’s hearing and/or vision screening, as well as what to do with this information.

If you did not receive this referral form in the US Mail and your child was present on the screening day, then your child passed the screening.

School based vision screenings may not detect every vision problem.  To learn more about possible vision problems and symptoms or health conditions that may require additional evaluation go to Montgomery County Government’s website at this link:

https://www.montgomerycountymd.gov/HHS-Program/PHS/SchoolHealth/HearingVision.html

Contact your school’s nurse if you have questions about your child’s screening.

Good evening MVMS families. This is your principal, Mr. Liburd, with our weekly message.

Please see below for some important information and updates for the week of October 10th.

Parent Notifications

Parents, I have just a few notes for you as we prepare to start another week of school.

We are seeing an increase in the number of students attempting the “ONE-CHIP CHALLENGE”.  Students are purchasing chips from the store (more than $8 for one chip) that are coated with either Carolina Reaper Pepper seasoning or Scorpian Pepper seasoning and then they are challenging each other to eat the chip.

This has made some students very ill, and disrupts their learning and the learning of their peers.  Please discuss this with your students and encourage them not to partake in this challenge.

Additionally, many students are arriving to school late because they are stopping by Starbucks or Mcdonald's on their walk to school.  While there is nothing wrong with them getting something for breakfast, they are arriving well after the late bell has rung for classes.  Also, please discuss with your student the importance of remaining on the school campus for the entire school day.

We appreciate your assistance in our efforts to keep our students in school and safe.

Week of August 29, 2022

Good evening Mustang families,

This is your principal Mr. Liburd with the first Sunday message of the 2022-23 school year!

We are so excited to welcome our students back to the building tomorrow and to share what our staff have been preparing to make this an amazing school year. Please some important back to school reminders below:

New Cell Phone Policy

As you may be aware, MCPS has instituted a county-wide; “Away-All-Day” cell phone policy. Last year, the use of cell phones and social media during school hours was a significant barrier to many of our students learning and feeling safe. Throughout this summer, I have been sharing the county policy in our community messages and now, I am sharing the finalized version for our school. Linked HERE, you will find slides that explain how the cell phone policy will be implemented here at MVMS. We are hopeful that this new policy will allow our students to focus on instruction, minimize distractions, and avoid the dangers of social media. Please review the slides with your student and remind them that while they can bring their phones with them to school, they must be “Away-All-Day” during classes.

Morning Drop-Off and Afternoon Pick up procedures

Because we are a community school, many of our students walk to school. We also have many students who are either dropped off or picked up by a caregiver. Our campus is located in a bustling section of Montgomery Village and the mornings can be especially dangerous as people try to get to work. Last year, we worked with the county police to ensure that our students arrive and leave our campus safely. Please see the reminders below to help our arrival and dismissal process as safe and smooth as possible.

  • Parents are not permitted to park, pick up or drop their students off at the Liberty Gas station, directly across from MVMS. Last year, one of our students was seriously injured during a hit-and-run incident and spent weeks in the hospital. PLEASE DO NOT USE THE GAS STATION AS A LOCATION TO DROP OFF OR PICK UP YOUR CHILD. We do not monitor the gas station or the road entering the shopping center.
  • Once your student arrives on campus (bus, drop-off or walking) they must remain on campus. We do not permit students to walk over to the gas station, 7-11, or McDonalds once they arrive on campus. If you would like to take your students to those establishments, please do so and then bring them to school.
  • Please do not pull over on Watkins Mill drive in front of the school. The county police monitor this area in the mornings and will cite anyone who pulls over illegally.

On-Campus Parent Drop-Off/(Parking Lot)

Please read the information below carefully and refer to the map attached to this message.

  • Students should plan to exit their parents' car as quickly as possible; this will support traffic and minimize congestion.
  • Parents can allow their students to exit their cars at any point in the "Student drop-off" area. The drop-off area begins near the bike rack and ramp on the right side of the parking lot. (See map)
  • Once a student has exited their car, they must walk on the grass or sidewalk to walk alongside the building to their grade level entrance.

We are so excited about the start of the school year. You can also find my Sunday messages on the MVMS website. Have a great rest of your Sunday!

Sunday, November 28, 2021

Good evening Montgomery Village Middle School families. This is your principal, Mr. Liburd, with the weekly roundup message.

Schedule for Week of November 29th

This week, we have a five day week. Tomorrow, Monday November 29th, students will begin the day in grade level homerooms to participate in Village Round Ups. Tomorrow’s schedule can be found here. We will resume our normal bell schedule on Tuesday.

Re-Establishing Expectations

As we return from an extended break, it’s important to re-establish expectations with students. On Monday, each grade level will participate in a grade level townhall meeting where students will receive reminders, important updates and the chance to celebrate their peers for their academic performance during the first quarter.  This week, our leaders are also taking time to address one of our biggest challenges this year; hallway transitions. Specifically, being late to class. Our leaders will be conducting hall sweeps to ensure students are in class and spending as much time as they can learning. The hall sweeps will be administered over several days and periods. Some parents may be contacted if their student is “caught” in the sweep multiple times. Hallway Monitoring

Parents, this year one of our biggest challenges has been the behavior we are seeing during hallway transitions. Most notably, many students are arriving to class late, leaving class without permission and attempting to roam the hallways unsupervised. Our goal is for students to maximize every minute of instruction to help them to increase their strengths, develop their academic identity and most importantly, be safe. In an effort to address this, our leaders have increased their presence during transitions to collect data, support staff and encourage students to get to class on time. This week, we are holding student focus groups to give students the chance to share their voice as we address this issue. The parents of students who are invited to participate in the focus groups will be contacted by school staff ahead of time. We will continue to update families as we continue to address this issue.

Please remember to visit our website for additional information and resources.

Thank you, and have a great evening.

TikTok Challenges

This school year, we are seeing concerning challenges circulating across social media platforms. These challenges encourage students to complete specific tasks or challenges and post their success on social media Over the past several weeks we have found several areas in our school vandalized. Specifically, our bathrooms and cafeteria. Soap dispensers  and sanitizer have been removed from the wall and their contents spread all over the  floors, walls and stalls in the bathroom. October’s challenge is to slap a teacher. Here at Montgomery Village, we do not tolerate any purposeful disrespect or vandalism of any sort. Any student who engages in these challenges will be issued an appropriate consequence and their families could be issued a financial obligation to offset the cost of the many wasted resources. We urge parents to monitor their childs’ use of social media and encourage you to speak to them about treating our school and the members of our village with respect. We will address these social media challenges during a whole school assembly on Monday. I’ve attached a memo from the Maryland Center for School Safety for your review.

MCAP Testing

This week children in grades 6, 7 and 8 will be taking the MCAP-ELA on October 6th and October 7th and the first section of the MCAP-Math on October 8th.  Please communicate to your children that students will not be allowed to have their cellphones on them during testing and they will be asked to leave them in their locker or to put them in their book bag which will be stored in the front of the classroom.  For the ELA test, students will need hardwired headphones and may bring their own to use during the assessment.  Please remind them to fully charge their Chromebook each night. Please review the bell schedules attached to this message.

As a result of the adjusted schedule, all students that take classes at the high school will report to the Media Center during period 1.  During ELA Math on 10/8, students will remain at Montgomery Village Middle school and will not report to Watkins Mill for their period 1 class.

ECA COVID Forms

Thank you families for your efforts to complete the ECA COVID Forms.  Students participating in EBB will no longer be required to complete the ECA Covid Forms but please continue to submit them for all other after school activity participation.

MCPS Student Quarantine Expectations and Rapid Testing

As we return to school, we continue to rely on our families and each individual to screen themselves daily for symptoms.  To help us avoid quarantine, we are asking that you please continue to screen your children at home and if they have even one symptom of COVID-19, or are awaiting COVID test results, please do not send them to school.

This is particularly important as if your child has any of the following single symptoms they will be sent home and not be able to return to school until they have a negative test, alternate diagnosis, or complete a full 10-day quarantine. The single symptoms that the health room staff screen for and will result in quarantine are cough, difficulty breathing, new loss of taste or smell, fever ≥100.4°, sore throat, severe Headache, diarrhea or vomiting.  Please do not send your children to school with any of these symptoms.  This is essential for us to continue to remain in school without quarantine.

Additionally, we now have rapid covid tests available for students. It’s important to note that even if a student has a negative rapid test result, they still have to be sent home per MCPS guidelines.

School Supply Give Away

Sunday Message- August 29, 2021

Good evening Montgomery Village Middle School families. This is your principal, Mr. Liburd, with the weekly roundup message.

I hope that you and your family have had a safe and relaxing summer and are ready for the start of the school year! Here are some important dates for the week of August 30th,

Schedule for Week of August 29

This week our students return to school on Monday, August 30th and we are so excited to see all of them! When students arrive at school on Monday, they will line up at their grade level entrances and will enter the building at 8:00 a.m. The 6th grade entrance is near the blacktop and tennis courts, the 7th grade entrance is to the right of the gym and the 8th grade entrance is to the right of the flagpole.

Once students are in the building, they will pick up their breakfast and then go directly to their homerooms. Students are assigned to their homerooms based on their last name, please review the attached homeroom list to help your student identify their teacher. Once in homerooms, students will receive their schedules and other important information. Students can also access their schedule now by logging into Student Vue on Synergy.

All students should plan to bring their chromebooks with them to school each day. Please check our school website for a list of suggested supplies.

Also attached to this message you will find our bell schedule and bus routes.

This year schools are being asked to utilize additional outdoor spaces to encourage social distancing during lunches. Here at Montgomery village, students will be allowed to choose three different areas to eat their lunch; the cafeteria, the mustang patio and under the awning of the 8th grade entrance. Students may also eat in a classroom if they are invited by a teacher. On Monday, students will come to the cafeteria to learn about our new lunch process during their grade level lunch periods. We are hopeful that our plan will increase our students' comfort eating with their masks off and support our return to in person learning. Stay tuned for additional information this week.

As a reminder, the Weekly Roundup messages are posted to the MVMS website. Please remember to visit our website for additional information and resources.

Thank you, and have a great evening.
