Highwood's 4th Annual Open Source Theatre Project co-produced with Loiederman Middle School. Read more here.

The show:

james

Come see the LMS Drama’s performance in partnership with The Highwood Theatre of James and the Giant Peach Jr! Based on one of Roald Dahl’s most poignantly quirky stories, and featuring a wickedly tuneful score and a witty and charming book, this adventurous musical about courage and self-discovery is destined to be a classic.

When James is sent by his conniving aunts to chop down their old fruit tree, he discovers a magic potion that grows a tremendous peach, rolls into the ocean and launches a journey of enormous proportions. James befriends a collection of singing insects that ride the giant piece of fruit across the ocean, facing hunger, sharks and plenty of disagreements along the way.

James and the Giant Peach, Jr. will be performed Friday, November 18th at 7:00 pm and Saturday, November 19th at 2:00 and 7:00 pm. Tickets are $10 for adults and $8 for students and seniors.
Tickets can be purchased at the door or online at www.thehighwoodtheatre.org/tickets.html.

Seventeen-year old Cammie gathers 24 members of her high school senior class at school one evening to solve the mystery of a bright light that appears on this precise day once every six years.  Cammie’s grandfather always believed that one of these students is an alien and that the light is a form of communication.  Knowing the beacon will shine in just a few minutes, Cammie is bound and determined to identify the alien among them.  Could it be the diva?  The jock?  The slacker?  The clumsy band geek?  As they all point fingers at one another, it seems each is both the accuser and the accused.  No doubt, everyone has something weird to hide.  Are these strange and unique characteristics truly alien or just part of being a teenager?  The surprise ending will leave you with goosebumps in this delightful, well-written character piece.

LMS Unplugged Tuesday

On Tuesday November 11th, the students and staff at A. Mario Loiederman Middle School for the Creative and Performing Arts in Silver Spring, MD will do the UNTHINKABLE; they will UNPLUG for the day. Students and staff members will pledge to unplug from technology for a whole 24 hour period, but in today's technology driven world will they be able to do it? A whole school unplugging for 24 hours means dropping computers, promethean boards, morning announcements, outlook web mail and cell phones, will LMS be able to do it?!?! Only time will tell!
The young artists and multi-talented staff of LMS are dropping all technology in support of the school's fall show Unplugged by playwright Laurie Bryant. Directed by theatre instructor Robyn Paley, and running from Thursday November 20-Saturday November 22, the play challenges audience members to consider living without technology for 30 days. Unplugged takes place in North Creek, Wisconsin, a small town that is 100% "plugged in" with the newest state of the art wireless technology. The town is offered $30 million dollars to unplug for an entire month, but like the students and staff at LMS, will they be able to change the way they communicate, think and act in an "unplugged" world? With a host of "plugged in" teenagers, an online science teacher who relishes never having to dress professionally from the waist down, and Winston, a virtual hamster whose very life is dependent on technology, the residents of North Creek will learn a valuable lesson about moderation and the time and place for technology in their lives.
Are you up for the challenge? Unplug with the LMS community of November 11, 2014 and share your experiences after the show on November 20-22. The students and staff at LMS will have to reinvent the way they communicate ideas, share experiences and socialize on this special day (and hopefully into the future) by reconsidering the effects of technology on their personal growth, their relationships, their education and their community. Unplug with LMS and support our young artists!

And a Child Shall Lead - Fall 2010

Synopsis:

This is the heroic and true story of children coming of age in Terezin, the "Jewish city" established by the Nazis near Prague as a way station before the death camps. In the face of unspeakable horror, these children use their determination and creativity to build lives filled with hope and beauty -- playing, studying, making art, and writing an underground newspaper -- all at the peril of being executed. Their actual poems and stories are woven into a fast-paced drama, evoking the universality of children caught in the insanity of war.

Show and Spell - Fall 2009

Synopsis:

Five middle school students take on over-zealous parents, crazy coaches, and nostalgic relatives as they prepare for the annual spelling bee in this insightful comedy. With contestants that range from an unflappable cheerleader who cheers all her words to the anxiety-prone daughter of a movie star, spelling the words correctly may be the least of these kids' worries. This play wonderfully illustrates the pressure that kids feel to compete, and the family support that makes it all bearable.
