ELD: English Language Development
ELD Curriculum & Instruction in Middle School
The goal of the ELD: English Language Development program at Loiederman Middle School is to support students as they acquire language and master content. Guided by the WIDA standards and the Common Core State Standards, the ELD program is designed to integrate language and content so that by the time students exit ELD services, they are ready and able to master grade level content. Students refine their skills in reading, writing, listening, and speaking through the study of the English language.
Students are assigned to courses based on their WIDA ACCESS score designation, as well as teacher recommendation. Possible courses include:
ELD 1
ELD 2
ELD 3
METS Reading
METS Math
Language of Math
ELD English
ELD Social Studies
Students who score between levels 1-3 also take many courses outside of the ELD department, including math, science, social studies, art, music, dance, and PE/Health. Students who score between level 4-5 generally receive one ELD course to support academic language, and take the majority of their other courses outside of the ELD department.
