Aqua Therapy
The students of Stephen Knolls enjoy the benefits of aquatic activity by participating in weekly swimming sessions in the school’s therapy tank. The warm water (95 degrees F), plus the added buoyancy and resistance that the water offers, combine to create a stimulating environment that facilitates movement and offers freedom from wheelchairs, walkers, braces, etc.
The mission of our aquatics program is to maximize each aquatic opportunity for each student by delivering appropriate, individualized, hands-on instruction in a safe, inviting, and comfortable environment. We strive to have each student achieve his or her maximum level of aquatic freedom and independence in the pool while enjoying the fun and therapeutic effects of the water.
Some benefits of aquatic activity include:
- Increased range of motion/flexibility
- Increased circulation
- Facilitated movement and weight bearing
- Sensory stimulation
- Relief from effects of gravity (i.e. joint compression)
- Increased cardiovascular fitness
- Increased strength and muscle tone
- Fun and relaxation
