    IMPORTANT:

    Parents, please keep your kids home from school if they are not feeling well. Do not medicate your child if they are not feeling well in the morning and send them to school. Keep them home until they are well.

    Students are excluded from school with a fever of 100 and a cough and/or sore throat until they are fever-free (without fever-reducing medication) for 24 hours. We are trying to prevent the spread of communicable disease in school. If your sick child is brought to the Health Room, they will be sent home.

    Handwashing is the best way to help prevent the spread of germs. Please have a discussion with your kids and emphasize the importance of handwashing during the school day.

    It is critical that current and correct emergency contact information is in each student's Synergy profile and that their health information is up-to-date. Please take the time to do it yourself, or contact the main office staff to help you with this.

    A NOTE ON MEDICATION POLICY

    It is likely that during this school year, your child will have a medication prescribed for the treatment of a health issue. The general policy we recommend is that children receive medication at home whenever possible. In the event that your child needs to receive medication at school, please note the following key points:

    • All medications, including over-the-counter meds require a physician’s written authorization (Authorization to Administer Medication, form #525-13). This form may be downloaded from the MCPS website or be picked up from the health room.
    • Prescription medications must be provided in a container with the pharmacist's label attached, and the name of the child and the dosage printed on the label.
    • For the safety of your student, as well as other students at school, all medications must be delivered to the school by a parent, guardian or designated adult.
    • Students may "self carry" emergency medications such as Epi-pens and inhalers with a physician's order and approval by the School Community Health Nurse. The written order will be kept on file in the health room.

    * * * Under no circumstances may students self-carry or self-administer other medications in the school setting (prescription or over-the-counter) unless the above written orders are on file in the health room.

    * * * Under no circumstances will the school administer medications or allow children to take medication that does not follow the aforementioned rules.
