Information about the National Junior Honor Society (NJHS)

The NJHS at Farquhar Middle School is open to 7th and 8th graders who have the following qualifications:

  • Scholarship
    GPA of 3.7 or higher 
  • Service
    This involves voluntary contributions made by a student to the school or community, done without compensation.
  • Leadership
    Student leaders are those who are resourceful, good problem solvers, and idea contributors. 
  • Character
    The student of good character is cooperative; demonstrates high standards of honesty and reliability; shows courtesy, concern, and respect for others.
  • Citizenship
    The student who demonstrates positive citizenship understands the importance of civic engagement.

7th grade:

  • 4 consecutive marking periods with a cumulative GPA. of 3.7 or higher
  • At least 20 SSL hours completed by quarter 1 of 7th grade year
  • Marking periods that will be considered are MP's 2, 3 & 4 in 6th grade in addition to MP 1 in 7th grade.

8th grade:

  • 4 consecutive marking periods with a cumulative GPA of 3.7 or higher
  • At least 30 SSL hours completed by quarter 1 of 8th grade year
  • Marking periods that will be considered are MP's 2, 3, & 4 in 7th grade in addition to MP 1 in 8th grade.

The difference in SSL hours is due to the fact that students earn 10 hours of service each year, which is embedded in the curriculum.

Once a student has met the requirements they will be notified in December of their eligibility.

After-School Activity Bus Routes

After-school activities begin Tuesday, October 4th and are scheduled on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 3:10—4:20 p.m.  Students hear about activities during morning announcements and lunches in case there are changes to any of the programs for the day.  There will be an activity fair Monday September 19th, during Advisory where students will be encouraged to pick up permission slips for after school activities.  Activities fill up quickly and there can be waitlists, so please return the permission slips to the sponsors ASAP.  Parents, please check the website for updates. Activity buses are provided each day and leave school at 4:30 p.m.  Bus routes are different from the regular routes and are posted on the FMS website.

After School Activities:

The following clubs will be meeting after school starting in October. More clubs will be advertised soon!!

RecXtra’s Leo Club:  Students with an interest in community service are welcome.  The Lions Club established the club in an effort to bring youth into community service through their school.  The club is dedicated to helping the community by engaging students in various community service projects.  Students will also participate in SERT activities such as collecting recyclables within our school and encouraging energy conservation. Students will receive student service learning hours for participating in projects.  Limited to 30 students.

Homework Club: HW Club is an extra-curricular activity offered on Tuesdays after school.  It is designed to give students an opportunity to complete homework in a peer-group setting. Phone use is strictly prohibited.

Jazz Band: A band for students that read music and play Trumpet, Trombone, Sax, Piano, Drum set, Guitar, or Bass. This band performs at the winter concert, MCPS Jazz Clinic, and the Music Department Spring Trip.

Sponsor: Ms. Lipford, Tuesdays starting in October, room 129

Musical Theater Club: A place for students that like to SING, dance, and act. This club will help prepare students for musical theater auditions.  Each week students will practice monologues, choreography, and songs from different musicals.

Sponsor: Ms. Lipford, Thursdays starting in October till December, in the cafeteria

Intramural Blacktop Basketball

Join in the fun and spend time with friends after school playing basketball, while enhancing and developing skills.

Sponsor: Ms. Williams, Wednesdays starting in October, meet on the Blacktop

Friendship Club:

Provides students with a friendly environment to meet and talk to their friends.

Student Government Association (SGA):  The SGA is designed to foster leadership skills, encourage school spirit, and teach democratic principles among students. As a student-run organization that represents the entire student body, SGA allows students to express concerns and take a stand on important issues.

Yearbook:  Students interested in creating the annual Farquhar yearbook assist with designing layouts, taking pictures, coming up with creative ideas, and advertising the yearbook sale.

RecXtra Dungeons and Dragons Club: Students come together to enjoy time playing D & D!

Minority Scholars Program:

Minority Scholars Program helps students develop the 5 Keys of MSP: 1) Academic Achievement; 2) Student Voice; 3) Enhancing Cultural Capital and Sense of Belonging; 4) Leadership Development; 5) Community Engagement

SAFE Club

Student-led and student-organized school club that aims to create a safe, welcoming, and accepting school environment for all youth, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity.

Peer Connections Program

This program is a leadership program focused on students supporting other FMS students in the different ways: peer mediation, ambassadors, and tutors.

Asian American Club

Asian American Club celebrates and explores Asian cultures, identity, social life, and issues. It is a fun, supportive space that encourages understanding and friendship between Asian-Americans and students of all cultural backgrounds.

Intramural Volleyball

All are welcome to sign-up to learn skills, enhance strategies, and play games!

RecXtra’s Japanese Anime and Culture Club:

Students will participate in discussions and activities relating to their favorite series. They will learn about Japanese pop culture and traditions as seen in the shows.
