School Community Health Nurses and School Health Room Technicians are Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services employees who work collaboratively with Montgomery County Public School staff and the community, to promote and improve the health, well-being and educational needs of children and their families. School Health Services employees provide first aid and emergency care services, medication and treatment administration, case management of students with chronic health conditions, conduct hearing and vision screenings, monitor for immunization compliance, connect students to health care providers and other community resources and provide health promotion and education.

IMPORTANT

When your child is sick, please keep them home from school. Students with an oral fever of 100 or greater should not come to school and should remain at home until they are fever free for 24 hours without using fever reducing medication.

Medication Administration in school:

Should your student need to take a medication at school, keep medication in the health room or self-carry emergency medication, please note the following:

MCDHHS and MCPS staff will not provide or administer any medications, including Over-the-Counter medications, to an MCPS student without an authorized prescriber’s order AND authorization by parent or guardian. Please have your child’s physician fill out Authorization to Administer Medication form, found below.
Prescription medications must be provided in a container with the pharmacist's label attached and must include the student’s name, medication, dosage, route of administration, times to be administered, and expiration date.
OTC medication must be in the original container with the manufacturer’s label with the safety seal intact and a visible expiration date. Per MCPS policy, the health room will not administer any expired medications.
Students may "self-carry" emergency medications such as Epi-pens and inhalers with a physician’s order and approval by the School Community Health Nurse. To self-carry an Epi-pen for anaphylaxis please have your child’s provider fill out the Emergency Care for the Management of a Student with a Diagnosis of Anaphylaxis form, found below.
For the safety of your student, as well as other students at school, all medications should be delivered to the school by a parent, guardian, or designated adult.
