FIFTH GRADE WRITING  

                     

 

 Quarter 1: Curriculum 2.0

 

Weeks 3-4 

 

Students will analyze various plot diagrams to determine how an adventure story is created.  They will create their own diagram based on the book, Jumanji.  They will also begin practicing the writing process by using weekly writing prompts.  Our first focus is to work on pre-writing to complete graphic organizers based on a specific prompt.   

Narrative:  They will draft, revise, edit, and create a final draft for a short narrative story that includes a protagonist, problem and resolution. 

Sentence Fluency: focusing on the flow of language in patterns and sentences

Conventions: focusing on accurate spelling, punctuation, capitalization and grammar

 

Week 1-2:  

  

Students will begin the school year by writing a creative Adventure piece based on the characteristics of adventure stories. Students will be evaluated on the 6 + 1 writing traits. The traits are as follows: 

  

Ideas: focusing on the topic of their writing, which should be narrow and manageable 

Organization: focusing on the internal structure of the writing piece; beginning, middle and end 

Word Choice: focusing on the use of rich, colorful and precise language that engages the reader in the content of the writing and makes the meaning clear 

Voice: focusing on a unique way to express writing ideas in an appropriate way for the intended audience 

Sentence Fluency: focusing on the flow of language in patterns and sentences 

Conventions: focusing on accurate spelling, punctuation, capitalization and grammar 

Presentation:  focusing on the final product of the writing piece
