Maryland Science Olympiad Competition Results!
The Clemente Science Team had a great event on Saturday, February 20th, 2016.
74 students participated in the Maryland Science Olympiad Competition last weekend at the University of Maryland at College Park. The Olympiad consisted of 24 different events with 37 teams from public, private, and home schools all around central Maryland competing against one another. Out of 74 students, 61 students received a top 5 award for one or more of their events in which they competed.
The Maryland Science Olympiad is a "hands-on" K-12 science program including rigorous academic interscholastic tournaments. Scientists and engineers from Maryland corporations, organizations, and universities collaborate with K-12 science teachers to oversee the 24 teamwork oriented tournament events. Tournament events are well-balanced between life science, earth & space science, chemistry, physics, technology, and inquiry. Competitive opportunities include Invitational, Regional, and State tournaments.

Verizon App Design Challenge
Please join us in congratulating one of our sixth grade humanities students! She is a member of a six person team with students from Rocky Hill MS and Parkland MS who entered the Verizon App Design Challenge.
Their team designed an app called AutBuddy, inspired by the autistic sister of one of the team members. The app forges clear lines of communication for students, families, and teachers for students who struggle to communicate clearly.
The most exciting news is that her team are national winners!
Each member wins the following:
- A $15,000 prize to assist them in building their mobile app from their winning design, to enhance STEM education at their school or sponsoring organization, and to cover the travel costs of the adult advisor's attendance at the National TSA Conference in Nashville, Tennessee in June, 2016, if they plan to accompany the winning team.
- “Best in Nation” certificates for each member.
- In-person and virtual training and support from Verizon Foundation partners to assist the team in building and publishing their winning mobile app.
- An android tablet for each student and adult advisor from the eight (8) Best in Nation team winners.
- The opportunity for each Best in Nation team that develops and publishes their app by June 1, 2016, to present their app at the 2016 National Technology Student Association Conference in Nashville, Tennessee. Travel, two night’s lodging, and registration fees for eligible Best in Nation winning team members and a parent/adult guardian will be covered as part of their contest award.

Future City is a cross-curricular program that lets students in the 6th, 7th, and 8th grades do the things engineers do: identify problems, brainstorm ideas, design solutions, test and retest, build and then share the results. For more information, you can check out their website at www.futurecity.org.

Final Frontiers Competition
10 students proudly represented Clemente Middle at the science and engineering competition, Final Frontiers held at Wootton High School on Saturday, November 14th, 2015.
The annual Final Frontiers competition, sponsored by the Maryland Space Business Roundtable and the Maryland Space Grant Consortium, took place this past November. Final Frontiers features a series of STEM (Science, technology, engineering, math) contests designed to challenge and inspire students to pursue science-related careers; the program is open to elementary, middle, and high school students. Division lines occur between grades 5-7 and 8-12. Public and private school students of Prince Georges and Montgomery County were invited to participate. Composed of five events– Aero Car, Shuttle Arm, Lunar Bridge, Newton’s Nightmare, Golf Ball Barrage, and Mystery Event– Final Frontiers presents interactive opportunities for students to show case their strengths as engineers. Although all events pertained to physics, each component required knowledge about specific branches of the subject.
