Instruction

Students visit the library media center every other week for literature appreciation and information literacy lessons. The library media specialist also collaborates with staff to develop and implement lessons integrating information literacy skills into instruction.

Special Programs

All students participate in Maryland's student choice program, the Black-Eyed Susan Award. Each year a new set of nominees is selected by school librarians from around the state. Students listen and respond to Picture Book nominees during their library instruction. Students in grades 4 & 5 may choose to read 3 of the 10 nominees in the Graphic Novel and the Chapter Book categories. Voting takes place in April and the winner is announced in early May.

5th graders are also invited to participate in Lunch Bunch. If randomly selected, students eat lunch in the library media center two or three days a week and listen to a Black-Eyed Susan Chapter Book nominee read aloud to them. This book counts towards the 3 students need to read or listen to in order to cast their vote!

3rd graders are invited to apply to be Student Library Assistants. These students come to work in the library several times each month to help us keep the space neat, clean and organized. Students are responsible for a section of the library, and also help with daily tasks such as dusting, watering the plants, sharpening pencils and running errands. They provide an invaluable service and are recognized at the end of the school year.

4th graders may join the Student Library Advisory Committee.  The group will meet during recess monthly and will advise Mrs. Taylor on a number of important library issues, including use of space, the collection and technology!

5th graders prepare and present our Morning Announcements.  The announcements are pre-recorded and air on classroom boards daily.

Hours

The library media center is open between 9:15 AM and 3:45 PM. Students can come for Open Book Exchange during their assigned grade level time with permission from their classroom teacher.  The doors will be closed if we have to cancel open book exchange.  Students bring their library card to the library when they come check out a book.
