At Burnt Mills, our Spanish Immersion Program follows the MCPS curricula at all grade levels.

Goal: To understand, speak, read, and write in both English and Spanish.

In Kindergarten - 4th Grade, Spanish immersion students remain with their Spanish teacher all day and receive instruction in all subject areas in Spanish.  Beginning in the 2nd semester of 4th grade, students will have 90 minutes per week of writing instruction in English.

In 5th grade, students receive instruction in all subjects in Spanish and 180 minutes of writing instruction in English per week.

Method: to immerse scholars in a target language environment while teaching the MCPS curricula. We use many visual aids, hands-on materials, songs, technology, and body language to insure understanding. As the scholars develop basic Spanish classroom vocabulary, they are encouraged to use these new expressions with their teacher and classmates.

Over the 6 years, scholars are increasingly expected to use more of the target language to communicate (orally and in writing) about the subject area and in their classroom experiences. Parents are encouraged to reinforce the new learning at home, allowing students to share their Spanish language experiences and deepening concept understanding in their home language.

Entry into the Program

Students are accepted into the program based on space.  No Spanish is required for entry into Kindergarten or 1st grade.
program4Program3 For entry into the program between 2nd and 5th grades, the student must show command of the Spanish language at their specific grade level. The immersion team leader interviews and administers a language assessment to a prospective student. Then a team of educators meet and makes a recommendation to the principal on admittance to the program.
