Burnt Mills Elementary

Burnt Mills Elementary school is a dynamic learning environment, designed with the child in mind!  We are a phenomenal school with small class sizes and highly qualified educators, who nurture the development of the whole child.   Whether a student is in our English Academy or Spanish Immersion program, we strive to provide every student with a high quality instructional program that meets their academic and social-emotional needs.

Our teachers work together to provide challenging and engaging lessons for students aligned to the Common Core State Standards.  The innovative use of technology in the classroom allows students to participate in technology enriched learning activities that prepare them with the knowledge and skills to excel in college and chosen careers.

We understand educating a child is a partnership between the home and school.  We are dedicated to building open and honest relationships with families.  At Burnt Mills Elementary, we strongly believe that each and every student matters and deserves optimal learning opportunities to thrive today and beyond.

Spanish Immersion at BMES

Burnt Mills Elementary is proud to be one of an elite set of MCPS schools who host a language immersion program. The goals of the program are to develop the abilities of students to understand, speak, read, and write in both English and Spanish.  The Spanish Immersion Program follows the MCPS curriculum at all grade levels.  Spanish immersion students receive instruction in all subject areas in Spanish.  Students in Fourth and Fifth Grade have opportunities for Reading and Writing instruction in both languages.   All MCPS elementary school students are welcome to apply!  Entry into the SI Program is by lottery.  No Spanish skills are required when applying to grades K or 1.   Students in grade 2-5 will have their Spanish Skills evaluated.  You can find more information on the Spanish Immersion tab on this website.

Character Counts:

Burnt Mills Elementary implements Character Counts® as our school-wide character and counseling program.  We use the Six Pillars of the Character Counts Program to teach and promote excellent character.   At Burnt Mills ES, we encourage all students and staff to demonstrate our Core Values.   Learn more about our SEL programs at the Counselor's Corner.
